Spell Checking

Almost all word processing programs come equipped with a tool for checking both spelling and grammar. However, writers should be wary of the dangers of relying too heavily on these tools. For example:

Spell check will not fined words witch are miss used butt spelled rite!

An ordinary spell checker will find few or no errors in the above sentence. This is because spell checkers can only detect if words are spelled correctly, not if they are used correctly.

That being said, a spell checker is a handy tool, and therefore should not be completely abandoned. However, writers should be cautioned from relying on it to catch every error.

Proofreading

ncte logoProofreading traditionally means reading a proof copy of a text in order to detect and correct any errors. Modern proofreading often requires reading copy at earlier stages as well.

The term proofreading is sometimes used incorrectly to refer to copy-editing. This is a separate activity, although there is some overlap between the two. Proofreading consists of reviewing any text, either hard copy (on paper) or electronic copy (on a computer) and checking for typos and formatting errors. This may be done either against an original document or "blind" (without checking against any other source).

Edited Write proofreaders are experts in finding the most obscure mistakes. From proofreading books to proofreading essays and legal documents, our checklist includes editing services you won't find anywhere on the Internet. And for those writers with the time to proofread their own documents or online content, our proofreading tips are invaluable.

Writing Tips

Building a well-written, and thus well-received, document doesn't happen instantly; it's a process of thinking, organizing, writing, and maybe most importantly, rewriting. Before you write, you must clearly understand the point of your paper, plan (either in your head or in a written outline) what you want to say, and begin to organize your ideas.

To effectively edit a document or online content requires a comprehensive proofreading checklist:

•Typographical Errors

•Grammatical Mistakes

•Run-On Sentences

•Punctuation & Quotation Marks

•Subject-Verb Disagreements

•Sentence Fragments and Lengths

•Spelling

•Apostrophes

•Comma Usage and Splices

•Capitalization

•Tenses

•Structure and Theme

•Organization

•Audience Appropriateness
